12 December 2012

Preliminary Totals XV: 128.7 million, Obama +3.68, 46 states certified

On 12/09/2012, the total national popular vote stood at: 128,473,594.

Today, 12/12/2012, 06:00 AM EST, the total now stands at 128,680,669.

That is 207,075 more votes added to the total since 12/09, and it is 7,274,793 more votes than by the first preliminary report on 11/09/2012.

Those 207,000 new votes, most of which came from upstate New York State, moved Obama's margin from +3.64% on 12/09 to +3.68% as of today. That is also a margin jump of  +1.16% over the first preliminary report, in which I also wrote:

"In 2008, Obama's election night national margin of +6.1 grew to +7.3 over 2 months, until the final canvasses were sent in and entered into the congressional record.  So, his current +2.52% national margin over former GOP nominee Mitt Romney is very likely to change, and also very likely to go up and not down, based on the states that will add the most to the totals from this point in time onward."

Notice that, based on this information, Obama's margin has grown by almost exactly the same amount between election night and the final canvasses in 2012 as it did in 2008. That is a very, very consistent statistic.

Here the national figures, at a glance:

We are now 2.8 million votes shy of the record breaking total NPV from 2008, which sounds like a lot, but when calculated, is a negative growth rate of just 2.11%.

How many votes are yet out? Well, last week, David Wasserman thought that about 600,000 votes were still out from the 5 New York City boroughs - and some of those votes have come in, but most of the New York State update in the last days has come from upstate NY - which is more RED territory, and yet, the President picked up a lot of votes. Wasserman thinks that Obama will go over 51% nationally. Wait and see.

As of today, 46 "states" (including DC) have certified their results. Here is the map:

States left to certify:

California, Hawaii, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia

3 of those 4 states are deep blue state, 1 is a deep red state, and the other, Pennsylvania, is a light blue state.

We already know that the California Statement of Vote should come out on 12/13/2012 (tomorrow).

West Virginia is supposed to certify on 12/19/2012.

Hawaii LOOKS like it already certified - it's documents now say "official", but the SOS made no press release to date about this.

Since Cuomo made the extension for the NY boroughs, I have no idea when they will certify, but according to Wasserman's excel table of the NY counties, the ones marked with an "x" have certified their results on their county websites. Of the counties remaining, it looks like Westchester, with only 80.9% of precincts having reported, 379,717 votes counted to date, then by extrapolation, then over 89,500 votes should still come in just from this county.

Oh, and just for some context: more votes have thus been counted in this one lone county in New York State (Westchester) than were cast in all of Alaska, or all of DC, all of North Daktota, or all of South Dakota, or all of Vermont, or all of Wyoming.

If still about 500,000 votes do come in from all the boroughs, which went by between 3:1 and 4:1 for Obama, then that should indeed be enough to bring him over 51% nationally and most likely, New York will join New Jersey as one of the few states in 2012 where Obama actually improved his percentage margin. Right now, he is under his 2008 statistic, but if those votes come in as David Wasserman thinks, then he will exceed his 2008 NY stats.

The complete table is here at GOOGLE DOCS and most of it is also here:
