21 November 2012

Preliminary Totals VI: Obama +3.22% and rising.

+3.22%

In just one day, from 11/19 to 11/20, Obama's national average has jumped from +3.07 to now +3.22%. And at 50.78% of the NPV, Obama has surpassed Bush 43's topline percentage and margin percentage from 2004, though he is still quite short of his historic victory in 2008.

When we compare the current margin (Obama +3.22%) to the end-polling through the early morning of November 6th, 2012, then right now, ABC/WAPO has come closest to the margin, having predicted Obama +3. However, should Obama climb over +3.50, then it will end up that  Democracy Corps was closest and if he climbs over +3.69, then both Democracy Corps and the RAND poll (a completely different type of polling model), which predicted Obama +4 and Obama +4.39, respectively, will have both nailed the results. And in the unlikely circumstance that Obama climbs over +4.19%, then the Rand Poll will have the top spot in polling accuracy. This is important information for the future. No matter how you look at it, even without the final canvasses in, it is now clear that the pollling organizations that the Right lambasted as being too "lefty" ending up getting it right.

Also, a current average of +3.22% means that the following pollsters were absolutely terrible in 2012, having missed the margin by at least 4 points, if not more: Rasmussen and Gallup, both having very falsely predicted Romney +1. This is also information to remember for the future. Both therefore had a mathematical CONSERVATIVE bias of +4, which is a terrible track record, but on par for Rasmussen considering its piss-poor performances in 2008 and 2010 as well.

This officially moves the election of 2012 from 10th place out of the 15 leanest elections in US history - which was discussed HERE, to 13th place, now behind Tilden +3.00 (1876), Cleveland +3.01% (1892) and Wilson +3.12% (1916).

Between 11/19 and 11/20, 620,723 more votes were added to the total count. That also calculates 4,498,843 votes added to the total vote count since my first preliminary report on 11/09, 11 days ago. The total as of 11/20 is 125,904,219. By my estimate, more than 1,000,000 votes is still out, if at all. Looks like we will land around127 million votes cast.

NY will post its first major update on 12/03:

Most likely, a great number of votes will be added from NY, mostly from New York City, which is guaranteed to pad the President's margin. Also, NJ is also guaranteed to come out with a major update soon. The NJ update from 11/20 was a small one...

The following states had updates: AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DC, IL, IN, IA, KS, ME, MD, MA, MS, MO, NE, NH, NJ, NM, OH, OR, RI, TX, UT, VA and WA (26 states). On the excel table, in the "% of NPV" column, those states are highlighted in dark gold to indicate that an update occured.

10 states have already certified their results, which means that they should be the exact numbers for the final canvasses and no more updates should be expected: DE, FL, GA, LA, NH, ND, SC, SD, VT, WY. Those states that are now certified have an asterisk next to the state's name.

-One important statistical change: MD has now moved to Obama +26.08%, thereby surpassing is percentage margin from 2008 and is now the fifth state where Obama statistically did better in 2012 than he did in 2008 (alongside, AK, LA, MS and NJ)

-another important statistical detail that almost no one is talking about: this is the first election since 1988 where every single state was a majority win. They were no minority wins at all. In every case, the winner of the state came in over 50%. In fact, since post-Civil War, this has happened only 8 times, where none of the states were minority wins: 1868, 1872, 1900, 1944, 1964, 1972, 1988, and now, 2012. What sets 2012 apart is that it has never before happened in such a lean election. The leanest election to date where this happened, in 1868, was  Grant +5.33%, the next leanest was 1944, which was FDR +7.49%, followed by 1988, which was Bush 41 +7.73%. I will be doing a complete write-up on this phenomenon in the next days. Stay tuned.

"47%" - poetic justice

Mitt Romney is currently at 47.56%. If he loses just 0.06% more on percentage, then he lands at 47.49%, which, when you use whole percentages, rounds down to 47%, which may just be poetic justice for the man who claimed that 47% of Americans are somehow moochers. What a truly stupid thing of him to say; it is something that is going to haunt the Republican Party for a good, long while.

Here is an excerpt from  table. The complete table, with extra links to additional sources, is here at GOOGLE DRIVE. BTW, the provisionals from Ohio are still not in the mix.
