Rick Santorum sure can LIE with the best of 'em, now can't he... DOGWHISTLE, DOGWHISTLE, DOGWHISTLE!

Here is Rick Santorum in Iowa right after the New Year and right before the Iowa Caucuses, in Indianola, Iowa, on January 2, 2012:

"It just keeps expanding - I was in Indianola a few months ago and I was talking to someone who works in the department of public welfare here, and she told me that the state of Iowa is going to get fined if they don't sign up more people under the Medicaid program,"

"They're just pushing harder and harder to get more and more of you dependent upon them so they can get your vote. That's what the bottom line is."

He added: "I don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money."

"Right," says one Iowan (another woman nods her head).

----------------------------------------------

When called out on this kind of blatantly racist statement, Santorum first hedged, which you can see here at CBS news.

And then he just plain old lied about it:

He now wants to fool us into thinking he wasn't talking about "black" people, he was talking about "blah" people.

Right. Uhuh. This is lying at its very finest. Hard to do in the age of youtube and smartphones and millions and millions of people who have ears and who can hear.

--------------------------------------------

I have no problem with a Conservative claiming that he thinks all entitlements are wrong and they should go. That Conservative should just have enough balls to get up and said it and let the public decide if they agree with him or her.

But there is no reason to single out on race, ethnicity or economic group to prove his point: if entitlements are so bad, then they are bad for all of us, not just blacks. What Santorum clearly did was to play to the racist, conservative GOP base of the party in Iowa to get votes, plain and simple. And especially since he is a man who claims to be a Christian, I think it is especially disgusting for him to use this "dogwhistle" tactic and then blatantly lie about it.

Also to note is that many, many, many more whites are receiving entitlements (especially food stamps) than blacks. But for the racist GOP base which thinks that blacks are constantly mooching off the system, this is pure "red meat" - exactly what they want to hear.

Rick Santorum is not going to get the GOP nomination and one day, when the dust is all settled, he or his campaign Manager are going to admit that this was a huge mistake.

And overall, the GOP is "dogwhistling" right now in a most disgusting way. The Young Turks have put out a small segment that seems to encapsulate it all:

Craig Crawford (1:04) "its not just a dogwhistle, humans can hear that one" - referring to Newt Gingrich calling President Barack Obama a "food-stamp" president....

Disgusting, truly disgusting. Reminds me a lot of the GOP from 1936.
